This action-packed ePulp Anthology unleashes four new noir tales inspired by the pulp magazines of the 1930s and 1940s. Blazing brawls and gritty adventure awaits dieselpunks, nostalgians, die hard or pulp-curious fans. Hope you can take a punch, because these two-fisted tales hit hard!

For young hoods, the Aether Age streets of mob-plagued Chicago present a world of opportunity. And Mack and Mickey are headed straight for the top in "That Sort of World a Tale of the Aether Age."

It's class-warfare in Citadel City as Pandora Driver and her Car of Tomorrow deliver rough justice to the elites and a douche named the Gooch in "Who are the People in your Neighborhood?"

"The Wise Man Says" introduces Mick Trubble a hard drinking, chain smoking charmer who bites off more than he can chew... then chews like hell. The Troubleshooter takes the grit and slang of a hardboiled detective and drops it in a dystopian setting that mixes Fedoras, trench coats, flying cars and android policemen.

The dirty streets of Roanoketown were his home and his only family. Until he met HER. Now he'll follow HER into hell, tamahaak held high, and fight as a proud Indian against the Anglo Oppressors. He'll wager his life to be a true "A Friend of Spirits."

I wish I could say otherwise, but I barely made it to the latter (and better) half of this collection. The first story -- 'A Tale of the Aether Age' -- rang in at luke warm, at best. It showed some really good description, at times, and hinted at an interesting and well-developed world, without ever really letting you see it.
The second tale, I have to say, almost broke me. 'Who Are The People In Your Neighborhood' reminded me in tooth-grinding, heavy-handed-fashion that 'pulp' doesn't necessarily have to mean poorly edited. Even if the writing, plot, or style had been worth it, the steadily changing tenses would have made me, personally, exclude this from a collection until it had been edited up to a grade-school-grammar level. But, they weren't.
Thankfully, though, I did make it to the third story. While the plot of 'What The Wiseman Says' was a bit tepid, the setting and style reminded me of why I still bother to hunt for good pulp writing. The story moves at the slam-bang pace of a Dick Tracy comic. I didn't even mind the stock non-background thrown up in place of character development. Somehow, it works, here.
And finally, 'A Friend of Spirits' turned out to be a charming little short story offering much more than its inclusion in this collection would at first suggest. Well-written and innovative in setting, my only complaint is against the term 'parrotpunk'... And that's just a personal gripe.
Overall, there were some gems here. Buried very, very deep. I'm glad I stuck it out, but now I miss Dick Tracy.

Great stories. I plan to look for other works by these authors, especially ones like "The Troubleshooter." The stories maintain a true noir tone.
I downloaded this book because I was already familiar with the mind-blowing works of one Mr Grant Gardiner. Quite frankly, not being familiar with Grant's special brand of diesel punk crazy should be a crime--at least, if it wasn't so darn difficult to get a hold of.

Predictably, Grant's story did not disappoint. However I was pleased to discover the other three authors were equally entertaining. What a bonus!

Authors John Picha, Grant Gardiner, Bard Constantine and Jack Philpott have each written easy reads which have enough heft to keep it interesting.
John Picha creates an interesting world but the story isn't very entertaining. Grant Gardiner's Dieselpunk superhero harkens back to the Golden Age of comics. Without the visuals, it was just cheesy. Brad Constantine has the best story in the book. He explains the world in which the story takes place and then spins a solid hardboiled detective yarn. Jack Philpot's story was excellent. However, the story didn't seem to take place in the setting described in the introduction. All four authors are decent to good writers. I'd recommend this book as an introduction to Dieselpunk. After reading this book, you'll know what kind of Dieselpunk, if any, you want to read more of in the future.
Read some of it for a friend who has a piece published here (Grant Gardiner) and he's an amazing writer, as I've seen his writing in my critique group. While some of the early scenes suffer, on the whole, his piece in this was really imaginative and visual. I'm looking forward to Tommy Thunder adventures, because they're always fun and well written generally. I just think they should have edited these a bit better. They weren't bad, just needed professional work. Still, the stories were pretty cool.
Yes it was really inexpensive, but not really knowing what diselpunk was, but incredibly intrigued by it. I gave this small anthology a shot. I think that one story out of four was any good, and just as you are getting into it, BOOM it's over. The rest just seemed tired, bad, poorly written. This was after reading a very promising forward about how awesome this collection was going to be, and welcome to the party. I'll stick with the tried and true cyberpunk. I'm sure that this is a fun, and exciting genre but i just don't think that this was the right one for me to start with in the genre.
The Dieselpunk ePulp Showcase is a great taste of Dieselpunk stories sure to slake the thirsts of fans of the genre and tempt the appetite of those who wonder `what is dieselpunk?'.

If you're a member of the latter group, and unsure what to expect, think Bond-like action, femme fatales of the finest caliber all set in a by-gone era of manners and fashion - but with small twists on our own world's history.

Each of the four stories occurs in a broader world of the writer's, but the stories are self-contained, you do not have to go out and buy something else of theirs to find out the ending - however you may find yourself eager for more and unable to resist.

Being short stories it's hard to do my usual analysing of characters, plot, pacing ect, because each story had its own of those elements. The style each writer brought to their story was great and all the stories are fun (even if some do not have happy endings). Expect some exciting and surprising twists in most of the tales. Also, for the appealing price of free it should be damn near impossible to pass by this book.

I recommend this book for anyone with any level of interest in Dieselpunk(including a curiosity as to what it is), the 1920s-1940s and lovers of great twisty action. Expect thugs, hoods, flappers and good old fashioned gumshoes.
